  1. That's wild! I never knew that about curry powder! When I say, "Indian food" to my friends in the U.S., they immediately say, "Oh…I don't like curry." As if Indian cooking revolves entirely around curry powder. Nice to know the history. Thank you for educating me.

  7. Should we believe the historical context of curry powder, it is a British invention. "Curry" stems from the Tamil word "Kari", which essentially means gravy. During the British Raj, the brits would refer to everything floating in gravy as "Curry". They invented the "Madras curry powder" to generically replicate the flavors they missed when returning back to the UK. So "Curry powder" is essentially just a blend of milder garam masala. I might be committing blasphemy here (sorry mother India. please know that I love you). But I think there is such a thing as "gravy powder" in India. But they are labeled differently, and specifically. There are many packaged and ground spice blends made for different gravy-based dishes. Indians even use them in their home-style cooking. There are mixes for Karahi dishes, makhani, shahi paneer, korma, fish masala, chicken masala, etc etc. So while "madras curry powder")is no such thing in authentic Indian cuisine, there are definitely specific spice blends for specific dishes.

  12. Yum yum. So good to see you both in a video together. You should do them on a regular basis. Idea- I have mentioned this before. Most of us don't have the knowlwdge or maybe sometimes the spices for curries and such. I have asked you to cteate a few on your show. Also seeing you use a mix from the UK tells me there is a need for these. You can even market them and sell them to us. Something to think about. Also be well and keep safe; so much unrest all around us.
