Why do I have lines on my lips?

Lip wrinkles occur for a number of reasons, including aging and consumption of foods and drinks that can contribute to the formation of lip wrinkles. Daily behavior can also speed up the formation of lip wrinkles. These include:

  • Drink from a straw
  • Prolonged exposure to the sun
  • Smoking
  • Whistling

Since the lips are constantly puckered or wrinkled, this contributes to the development of lip wrinkles.

How to get rid of wrinkles on the lips?

Fortunately, we have five ways to help get rid of lip wrinkles.

1. Exfoliate your lips

Exfoliation is the key to getting rid of lip wrinkles.

Using a lip scrub or lip balm can help get rid of chapped lips, reduce dryness, and improve barrier function. Ideally, use a lip scrub at least twice a week to ensure thorough exfoliation. When exfoliating, pay special attention to lines and avoid excessive pressure on the delicate skin of the lips.

A few simple homemade lip scrub recipes:

  • Basic scrub – 1 tsp honey, 2 tsp sugar
  • sugar scrub – 2 tablespoons fine sugar, 1 tablespoon olive oil, ½ teaspoon honey, 1-2 drops of your favorite essential oil.
  • Honey scrub – 2 tsp sugar, 1 tsp honey, 1 tsp almond oil
  • Oatmeal scrub – 1/2 cup ground oatmeal, 1/4 cup sugar, 1 tbsp honey, 1/4 cup vegetable oil

2. Use lip balm with sunscreen

Lip wrinkles are often more visible when the skin is dry.

A lip balm with sunscreen will help protect your lips from the sun’s harmful UV rays and keep them hydrated. It is important to use a lip balm that contains a broad spectrum SPF that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. It’s ideal to aim for a minimum of SPF 30, although SPF 50+ is best.

Some of our favorite sunscreen lip balms are Nivea Ultra Care and Protect SPF 30, Bondi Sands SPF 50+ Lip Balm, and Blistex Ultra Lip Balm SPF 50+.

3. Take Collagen Supplements

Collagen is ideal for maintaining youthful skin.

Our body naturally produces collagen, but as we age, its production is depleted. This can lead to wrinkles on the lips, among other signs of aging.

Collagen supplements help boost collagen levels in the body and keep skin looking youthful. Some great collagen supplements include: Hydrolyzed Collagen, Marine Collagen, and Biocell Collagen. Collagen supplements can be mixed with water, added to your favorite smoothies or meals.

4. Quit smoking

Smoking is one of the worst things you can do for your skin.

Since smoking requires repetitive movements and pursing of the lips, this can lead to the formation of lip wrinkles. Smoking also contributes to premature aging and increases the risk of skin cancer. Smoking reduces blood flow to the skin, which deprives it of the oxygen and nutrients it needs for healthy skin. The longer you smoke, the more wrinkles you may develop. If you’ve been smoking for a long time, it’s okay – it’s not too late to quit.
